Installation Process Overview

A professional artificial turf installation follows a systematic 6-step process. Each stage builds on the previous one—skipping or rushing any step can compromise the final result and reduce the turf's lifespan.

Whether you're installing a residential lawn or a professional sports field, the same fundamental workflow applies. The key is proper preparation and attention to detail at every stage.

1
Site Preparation
Clear, level & measure the area
2
Base Construction
Lay sub-base & ensure drainage
3
Turf Installation
Roll out, position & trim the turf
4
Seaming
Join turf rolls with tape & adhesive
5
Infill Application
Spread sand & rubber infill evenly
6
Final Inspection
Check seams, brush & quality control

Installation Methods

Different applications require different installation approaches. Below are the two most common methods—landscape and sports field—each with its own base system, layering, and finishing requirements.

Landscape turf installation method

Landscape Installation

  • Weed barrier: Lay geotextile fabric to prevent weed growth beneath the turf.
  • Crushed stone base: Compact a layer of crushed gravel for stability and drainage.
  • Sand infill: Apply silica sand to weigh down the turf and keep fibers upright.
  • Edging & securing: Use galvanized nails or landscape edging to fix the perimeter.
Sports field turf installation method

Sports Field Installation

  • Shock pad: Install an elastic pad layer for impact absorption and player safety.
  • Seam joining: Use professional seam tape and adhesive for invisible, strong joints.
  • Infill system: Apply layered sand and rubber infill to meet sport-specific performance.
  • Line marking: Inlay white lines or cut-in markings for field markings and logos.

Common Installation Mistakes

Avoid these frequent errors that can shorten turf lifespan, cause drainage issues, or create an uneven playing surface. Each mistake comes with a quick fix tip.

Poor Drainage

Inadequate slope or missing drainage layers causes water pooling, leading to mold and turf detachment.

Fix: Ensure 1-2% slope and proper sub-base compaction.

Incorrect Seam Installation

Misaligned seams or insufficient adhesive creates visible gaps and weak joints that separate over time.

Fix: Align grain direction and use quality seam tape & adhesive.

Uneven Base

A poorly leveled base causes bumps, dips, and inconsistent ball roll—especially critical for sports fields.

Fix: Screed and compact the base in thin layers until level.

Wrong Infill Amount

Too little infill causes fibers to flatten; too much makes the surface hard and reduces performance.

Fix: Follow manufacturer specs for kg/m² and brush evenly.
